Here we have a selection of 0n3 MMI Loco's. Three are sound fitted whilst the fourth could be. As one of the rare in the UK 0n3 modellers I have to fight a strong tempation to keep these models for myself.

To clarify the 0n3 / 0n30 thing for those that don't know. These are models of 3ft gauge prototypes in American 0 gauge, which is a quarter of an inch to the foot scale. This scale/gauge is called 0n3 and therefore these models, correctly, run on 3/4" gauge track. They don't easily regauge and they, prototypically, have all the driving wheels flanged

0n30 is a commercial compromise which really represents 2'6" gauge. Versions of these MMI locos were produced to the narrower 0n30 gauge (16.5mm) and are often available second hand now. They have further compromises such as flangless drivers on the 2nd & 3rd axle so they'll go round the larger train set curves

DCC & Sound

This Mountain Model Imports K36 #482 has been fitted with Soundtraxx Tsunami DCC Sound.

It has been run on our short test track and runs very nicely indeed. it has had a kadee 0n3 coupler fitted to the tender. [if I didnt already have a 482 I'd be keeping this one]

The K36 was the penultimate loco MMI produced so by this time they had worked out most of the wrinkles and produced a smooth working DC model. This one has been enhanced with Soundtraxx Tsunami DCC sounds and LED lighting. It is in very good condition and still has the lubricator drive rod [this is fragile and is a good indicator of how the model has been handled.

DCC & Sound

The K28 was the second loco produced by MMI and as such, as new, they had some issues that MMI were still getting to grips with. Principally the DCC wiring was unreliable and the low voltage filament lighting was prone to blowing. All of this is fixed with a DCC and Sound install along with LED Lighting as it results in a total rewire.

0n3 K27 #461

DCC & Sound

The `inboard' cylinder version of the K27 was the fourth loco produced by MMI. For an explanation of the K27 history and the whole inboard / outboard thing go HERE on my blog.  The real 461 was a D&RGW loco but ended its days sold to the Rio Grand Southern.

This model was rewired by me and has LED lighting, a Soundtraxx Tsunami Decoder and a Current Keeper circuit for smooth running. The engine to tender fall plate has been repaired as the hinge came unsoldered. They appear to be prone to this as I have repaired quite a few.
