K27 Tips
K27 Projects & Maintenance

These pages were started when the engines were first delivered in June 2005 but I have been adding to them inspired by the page I've done for the K28.

There is still scope to add more to these pages as I have only done enough to my two to get them running in “display mode” on my rolling roads at exhibitions. I have done two other Tsunami installations for others, both of these were done to PLAN A. as a result of those I can feel a PLAN B coming on for the second of my engines.

Who knows how this page will develop but my plan as I start it is to try and collate issue, maintenance and projects involving the MMI K27.

History of the Model
The model was announced late in 2003 with a projected delivery in spring 2004.

As it was it took a lot longer. First sight of parts of the model was seen at the 24th Narrow Gauge convention in Santa Clara, California and final delivery finally happened in June 2005.

The models were announced to be available with sound and DCC but this turned out to be both inaccurate and misleading. The sound system was rubbish and the best improvement you could make was to snip the wires to the speaker and the "DCC fitted" turned out to be "DCC sort of ready" if you just plugged a decoder in the lighting was very bright but only briefly as the 1.5v lamps got the full DCC voltage.

With a little work though all of this can be sorted out.

Getting the Body Off

Lets do this in two parts. Here we'll deal with the history of the model.
Lets start with getting the body off  -  click the pictures for a bigger view

Support the loco upside down in a cradle. If you don't support it enough it is continually trying to roll over.

Remove the pony truck pivot screw and the pony truck. Remove the small bracket by removing the two small screws. Set aside.

A shiny centre screw should now be revealed.

Remove this centre screw.

At the rear remove the two screws as shown.

Lift the front of the body arcing it backwards as shown. Look out for the reach rod not coming free from the chassis and bending. You have to arc the body back as shown to clear the injector pipes that are threaded through brackets on the chassis

That's the chassis free.

What next?

Well, that's as far as I have got. Next time I get the chance then I will be fitting the NCE decoder
