OCTOBER NEWSLETTER |
|
Well you
made it to the new style October Newsletter. Well Done |
|
In
this newsletter you will find some special offer prices only available
if you order them using the order buttons in this newsletter. If you
order them from the main pages you'll get charged the normal price. The
offers in this issue are whilst stocks last or to the 15th October,
which ever happens sooner |
|
We’ve been
back from the USA for about three weeks now. We had a great time but the
bags liked it so much that they stayed away for an extra three days! The
journey home was a bit of an ordeal with Heathrow doing its best to make
us wish we had stayed in the US. It was a bit disconcerting to be sat on
the plane in Chicago and have the pilot announce that there would be a
slight delay whilst they got a part from the stores and then having
fitted the part announce that they now needed to take some extra fuel
into the wing tanks. I’m guessing the part was a fuel gauge or sender
and once it told the truth it revealed we hadn’t got enough to get home.
The first
week back was a bit of a loss to EDM given that we got jet lag quite
badly and both Annie and my day jobs had saved up all sorts of grief for
us whilst away so it was the second week before we made any inroads into
the EDM backlog. And it was a big back log. Remember all those limited
edition projects that we’ve been promoted that should have been
delivered at intervals over the past year? Well they all arrived either
just before we went [like the day we left] or were waiting for us when
we got back.
The trip to
the NG Convention in Durango was a big success. We did OK selling our
own stuff but have arranged a lot of new dealerships and contacts. This
stuff is just coming into stock now. |
| Here are the contents of this newsletter |
Remember, offers in this issue are good until
stocks run out or the 15th October - whichever comes first
Do please let
us know what you think of this way of doing the newsletter.

EDM/Banta – Backwoods Loco & Repair Shed |
These arrived just as we were leaving for the USA. These have
now all been sent out in the last few days unless you have
arranged to collect at a show.
The
planned 2006 batch has sold out but we have a small reserve left
if you’re quick.
If
we do a 2007 batch the price will be significantly higher. |
|
EDM/Banta – Baker Tank
 |
These arrived just as we were leaving for the USA. These have
now all been sent out in the last few
There are a few left and are on their way from the USA as I
type. |
|
Wiseman Shays |
The
wait was worth it. This much delayed project arrived whilst we
were in the USA and they are fantastic.
These were sent out by Royal Mail on 29th September
unless they are coming with something else or you have had a
personal e-mail from us. |
|
Soundtraxx – Sound fitted Shays |
Fantastic: These Bachmann shays fitted with a bespoke Tsunami
sound decoder sound fantastic. There are just a couple left if
you are quick.
Backordered engines went out by next day carrier on Friday 29th
September so they should arrive on Monday. |
|
Soundtraxx – Sound fitted Climax |
These were as good as the Shay but are now sold out. |
|
Soundtraxx – Sound fitted 2-8-0's |
I
collected these from Soundtraxx whilst we were in the USA. They
are excellent and the sound transforms the engines.
Backordered engines went out by next day carrier on Friday 29th
September so they should arrive on Monday.
There are just a couple left if you are quick. |

|
After that
news we come to a couple of special offers for this newsletter. Both of
these are one time offers with quantities very limited. Orders are on a
first come first served basis.

BLW - 0n3 Drop Bottom Gondolas
 |
The
fantastic models of both the 700 & 800 series D&RGW drop bottom
gondolas are superb. They are 0n3 [not 0n30] made of wood and
brass and fully painted in the correct livery. They come with
metal wheeled highly detailed trucks. Couplings and a brake
stand are supplied for the user to fit.
I
have a number of these for my own layout but I have these
available: -
-
2 off 700 series
-
2 off 800 series
They
are £100 each plus postage.
I
realise that both the scale and the price of these items make
the appeal of these limited but they are gorgeous models.
However, if you have ever built one of the Grandt Line ones you
will appreciate the complexity of these models. If they don’t
sell they’ll live happily on my railroad. |

| LITCO Turnouts
This is a new range of turnouts for HOn3, Sn2,
0n2, 0n30, 0n3 and HO standard gauge turnouts on PC ties or wood and PC
ties. A limited range will be available with the aim of being able to
keep them all available.
LITco
turnouts are GUARANTEED TO WORK -period. All turnouts are tested
mechanically and electrically before shipping.
We
collected a limited number at the narrow gauge convention. This was just
a small section of our order due to demand for them at the show and the
guys at LITco are only just getting set up for volume sales. They don't
have an over centre spring like Peco so you will need to add something
like the BLUE POINT CONTROLLER above

Colorado &
Southern
Road Number C&S 519/C&S 515
These 30’
refrigerator cars are box car red with yellow sides and run on
Barber® Coleman Arch Bar trucks.
Built for the
Colorado and Southern as series 500-519 in 1909, these cars were
repainted and renumbered in 1912 when they received the numbers
1100-1119. Some of these cars ran the rails for nearly thirty
years, thanks to multiple rebuilds. |

Micro Engineering Track
After a couple of false starts in getting
a dealership organised with Micro Engineering we now have one and have
our first items in stock now as listed below. Over time we will be
adding to this range.
The good news is that the 0n30
turnouts promised for a long time are nearly here. ME had samples on
show at the NG Convention.

We
will be adding to this range shortly. The problem I have yet to solve is how to
take this range to shows and display it. Its also going to be a bit of a swine
to post as it can't ship with other items and needs special packaging. These are
going to be the conditions [as will apply to all our track]
At
a show you can take any quantity but I STRONGLY suggest you give us
advance warning of any large quantities you want to allow us to make sure we
have it in stock

£98 |
£98
Yes, that’s right a full spec’d DCC system
with access to all functions for loco and sound operation
for under £100
Also this is the easiest to use DCC system I
have come across and, when you want to expand, this bit fits
in perfectly and doesn’t become obsolete |
Seriously, I played with this system whilst in Durango at the Narrow
Gauge Convention having made the challenge “why should I buy this one”
and without instruction was selecting and running engines and then
easily programming loco’s. I was so impressed they whilst I didn’t buy
the company I did sign up as a dealer there and then.
The
starter sets from other manufactures all come with a limited
specifications which in an era of sound fitted loco’s usually has you
buying upgrades straight away and, often, it leaves the kit you have
already without a job on your layout.
This one
does all that the other systems in
the range do, you can run loco’s, use all the sound functions and
program locos. Unlike the other systems its display uses English instead
of codes and it guides you through each program.
So what’s
the catch?
1. Of course it has a limitation. It’s limited to 2 amp which means
in our scale you are probably limited to 2 or 3 engines being powered at
the same time. Of course this is fine for most impoverished narrow gauge
lines but it upgrades easily should your railroad hit pay dirt.
2. You need a US bladed plug to UK 3 pin adaptor. It doesn’t need to
change voltage as the PSU is a 110-240v unit. I have some adaptors
coming from the USA – as I type FedEx has got them as far as Chicago and
they’ll only be a couple of quid.
If you
want a final recommendation – I’m using it on my layout instead of the
Lenz system I’ve used for the last five years

The
Pulpit
My chance to inform or just have a whinge
and moan!
This issues
sermon - Limited Editions\Special Runs |
So
what's this bit all about? Well its meant to be a bit of a chatty bit
and an opportunity for me to inform on various subjects. I've chosen
the topic this week but for the future feel free to suggest some
topics you want to know about. This issues topic is
limited editions. Why? Well, from the phone calls, letters and
attempted orders I get its clear there are people out there who
don't understand so here is another attempt to explain. I realise
its likely to be the equivalent of trying to order our cat about but
here goes....
|
What are limited editions? |
Limited editions are runs of a product
that isn't going to be in production continuously where only
a set number are to be produced. Once that quantity is sold
the run won't be repeated |
|
Why do they do it? |
There are a number of reasons. These
are: -
-
Making a limited run allows the
manufacturer to charge a premium for the model.
-
Offering reservations in advance
allows the manufacturer to gauge the demand and set the
quantity - [see the note below on quantities]
-
It allows one production line to
make many items.
-
It allows the smaller producer
make a more extensive range over time.
|
|
How limited is limited? |
This can actually vary from project to
project and manufacturer to manufacturer. Here are some of
the options: -
-
A one off quantity and then there
aren't any more, not ever. Stoney Creek Designs do this
with an annual release - usually timed to coincide with
the NG Convention.
-
The run will be a limited one with
the total being set by the number of advance
reservations received but the run will be a one time
only and won't be rerun if it sells out. Mountain Model
Imports, Broadway Limited and Precision Craft Models
amongst others operate like this.
-
The run will be an annual run with
a limited quantity of kits each year. This sets an
annual quantity but doesn't rule out another run in the
future. Currently we do this for our Backwoods Loco &
Repair shed and the Baker Tank. By setting a quantity it
allows Banta [for these examples] to make the annual
amount in one efficient build even if they don't ship
them all to the UK in one go.
|
|
Why should I order in advance - 1? |
| |
