Welcome to the middle of March issue of
the EDM Models Newsletter. I started creating this issue last
week and then got distracted by the day job and the need to gets
some sound installations finished and then the weekend
disappeared as it was the Narrow Gauge North Exhibition so as
usual I am behind schedule albeit my own self imposed one. I now
plan on sending this newsletter out on Thursday evening - you'll
only know if I achieved this when you receive it.
This is issue so far has a serious
building theme to it with EDM offering limited edition building
kits from two closely linked suppliers in the USA. Roger
Malinowski is the designer for both his own range and for the
new range coming from Mt Albert Models. Roger is a renowned
modeller and his kits sell out fast to be followed by an active
trade for them from people seeking them because they missed out
initially. I've said it before but I'll say it again these are
limited editions, a set number are made and when they're gone
there will be no more.
Later on in this issue there are
some notes on revised operations at EDM. We remain as committed
to bringing you the ranges we deal in and bringing more to your
attention but other commitments require us to take a slightly
different approach to the time we spend on EDM projects.
Other items that make it in to the
newsletter will very much depend on what I get added over these
next few evenings up to publishing time so I'll leave them as a
surprise as you read down the page.

Our supplies of
Boulder Valley models have been low for awhile with BVM
struggling a bit to keep up due to the popularity of a
couple of new items.. We're now getting caught up having
had a couple of deliveries that have allowed most of our
back orders to be cleared with more on the way.
A task for the near
future is a major renovation of the BVM pages on our
website but meanwhile here are some details on two of
the projects that have created the demand. These are not
on the main website yet.
"The Little Bitty Mini Max"
If Bachmann's 28-ton On30
Climax is "just too big" for your layout ...
we have the perfect solution!
The BVM
"Little Bitty Mini-Max" is a very accurate model of the
14-ton "Apex" locomotives (a Climax knock-off) produced
by the Malarky Bros. Locomotive Works exclusively for
30" gauge railroads. The kit will convert the
smooth-running Bachmann HO Climax into a Mini-Max well
suited for 15" radius curves and even running down to
about 12" radius.
"Just the right
size!"
Yup! As you can see here, the Little Bitty Mini Max
14-ton loco is quite a bit smaller than the Bachmann
28-ton On30 Climax. It's just the right size for small
or medium layouts ... LOADED with character and DETAILS
galore! This little loco just screams "narrow gauge" ...
and the kit is carefully designed to allow room for a
full crew and space for a sound decoder and speaker if
desired. Photo courtesy Alan Carroll.
Our most detailed kit
yet! The Apex Mini Max features the top-quality castings
you'd expect from BVM, with major assemblies such as the
front deck, boiler, cab and on-board tender ... plus
LOADS of details, including front & rear steps, optional
poling pockets, number board, front & rear oil
headlights, stack, sand dome, bell, piping, cab seats,
boot-boiler firebox with back-head and steam dome, fuel
load (wood or coal), water filler and two toolboxes.
Basically, everything you see here except the HO drive
unit, paint, lettering and figures. Wow!

ADDITIONAL
REQUIREMENTS:
You'll need a Bachmann HO SCALE 50-ton
Climax to provide the drive unit ... along
with your choice of paints, glue (ACC or
5-minute epoxy), figures and any additional
"clutter" you may wish for added character!
The Mini Max provides space for a SMALL
sound decoder (not included) ... such as the
Soundtraxx DS-090LC Light Steam or small Lok-Sound
decoder. There is room in the tender for a
1/2" x 1" oval speaker and a second or
alternate speaker (same size or 3/4" round)
may be installed in the cab roof.
INTERMEDIATE
SKILL LEVEL:
The kit has been carefully designed for
straightforward assembly, however it does
include a number of small pieces and it does
requires some care to fit pieces properly
around the HO mechanism. If you've built any
of our other loco, railcar, speeder or
premium freight kits, you'll have no trouble
following the detailed, illustrated
instructions ... but we don't recommend this
as your very first resin kit!
RESERVATIONS:
We have had these in stock but they sell
very quickly so we will fill reservations in
the order we receive them and as quickly as
we can get the kits from BVM
Steel Boxcar
Build 'em
clean or add some dust-n-rust ... this husky steel
boxcar is a must! Inspired by EBT prototype and also
similar to steel cars used on South American narrow
gauge roads.
Most
railroads required that the doors be closed and latched
during transit ... but as modellers we kinda like that
open door to allow for interior detailing, loading-dock
scenes or even just to let the hobos poke their heads
out and take a look around ... doors slide freely in
tracks, so cars may be run with doors open, partially
open or closed.
This car is
loaded with free-standing detail ... vertical brakestaff
and wheel, brake platform on end, strap stirrups on car
sides, drop-style grab-irons on car ends, foot stirrups,
sliding doors, brake cylinder and simulated rigging ...
plus optional tack boards as described below. Sample
shown with BVM T-2 trucks and Kadee #5 couplers --
available separately.
tack boards (circled) are moulded
separately and may be placed where desired or omitted.
These wooden placards provided a place for crews to tack
car orders

MMI Outboard K27's
We still
have a few of these left but the choices are reducing
fast. If you were thinking of having one don't leave it
until its too late.
MMI C19 2-8-0
This 2-8-0
is the next loco due from MMI and we are now taking
reservations for these. It will be even more important
to have reserved one of these as I wont be bringing any
extra ones in as stock models.
New from MMI
MMI have
announced more locos for their future program including
a 4-4-0 and the Uintah and Sumpter Valley Mallets. These
are all sometime in the future and I'll do a feature on
the additions in a future newsletter
PSC Parts
We had a
delivery of detailing parts from PSC last week so we
have reasonable stocks of the items we usually keep
[although I haven't looked to see what's left after NG
North.
PSC Catalogues
We have a small number of the 0
scale loco details parts catalogue in stock. This is an
epic tome the size of a copy of the yellow pages. I know
its expensive but a fantastic reference book.

The first two of these offerings
are excellent decoders but they have been overtaken by new models. The GOLD
mini offered is the one with the plug pins rather than leads and they are
offered here because I cocked up and ordered too many of the wrong sort.
News from Soundtraxx is that they
have withdrawn most of the LC series decoders due to
difficulties in obtaining the components to make them.
This includes the Shay and Climax plug an play kits.
They were able to do a last run to use up the remaining
components and we were able to get a few of these.
Once these have gone there will be
no more and, so far, not alternative has been suggested

I am pleased to say that the NCE PowerCab set
continues to sell well and I am getting positive feedback from
customers who are taking their first steps in to DCC with this
system.
Since we started selling this model last October we
have sold close to 100 units and the only real problem we have
had has been keeping them in stock. As I write we have them back
in stock again at the moment but there has had to be a slight
price rise in that adaptor is no longer included in the price

very popular although the larger ones have a limited

To kick start this we have need to get a decent sized
first order together so we're offering a newsletter
special price on the kits but with a pretty tight time
frame.

This is a brand new Rivarossi Heisler in HO as shown
in this picture.
I bought it intending to convert it
to 0n30.
The model is brand new and is even still sealed in
the cellophane of its fancy presentation box. I am
selling it as part of a slimming down of the projects I
am never going to get round to. Getting it seemed like a
great idea at the time but I have way to many projects
to do so this one gets to go.
This is a private sale
and not an EDM models/ngtrains production so payment
will have to be by cheque payable to me personally and
not to the business.
SOLD
This is the waffle about the engine from
their promo packs
Now the legend is reborn in these Rivarossi models! Each
begins with an all-new body that completely eliminates
molded-on detail. All of the piping, sand lines, air
lines, and more are now separate details. Blackened wire
grab irons and handrails add to the realistic effect.
There's also a solid-brass whistle, pop valves, bell,
front number plate and photo-etched builders plates. And
check out the other new features like flush-fitting cab
windows, optional headlight styles and working knuckle
couplers. Inside that beautiful body lurks a tough, new
drive that works like a real Heisler! A can motor and
new gearbox are connected to a super replica of the V-2
"motor engine," so the crankshaft, rods and valve gear
move like the originals. Driveshafts transmit power to
solid-metal worm gears on one axle, and side rods power
all of the wheels just as the prototype did. Best of
all, the models are DCC-ready so you can plug in your
favorite decoder and start running. A larger weight and
an optional traction-tire-equipped driver set are
included to improve pulling power. Plus, the trucks have
been carefully engineered to provide all-wheel
electrical pickup and still take incredibly sharp curves
with ease. Perfect for any industry from logging to coal
mining to industrial switching these new models are
offered in both 2 and 3 Truck versions. Each is fully
assembled and factory painted, ready for the roughest
chores on your layout.
Closures & Absences
As most of you will know
EDM models isn't my main job and that it has to fit around the day job
as a senior electrical engineer for a large UK consultancy which sees me
designing, modelling [in a computer] and commissioning traction power
supplies for railways in the UK and overseas. So its mega amps by day
milli amps by night!. This job has to take priority as it pays the
mortgage on the house.
You will also know
[because I've told you often enough] that my other hobby is as a
volunteer on the Festiniog Railway where I am a driver and have been
known to manage the odd loco project or two and design stuff like the
railways push pull train.
Over the last few years EDM
models has grown to the point where it and the day job clash, the
Festiniog barely gets a look in and I seem to be getting more and more
tired which in turn means I get more and more fed up with it all. A
couple of recent events have brought all of this into sharp focus and
have prompted a bit of a rethink which is going to result in a change in
the services we offer and some periods when the business is closed.
These are detailed below: -
Our custom works,
decoder installation and sound fitting service is suspended with
immediate effect and will last until we have cleared the backlog.
Only then will we consider taking more work but I may decide to get
on and build my own layout. Work already started will be completed.
The business will be
closed from the 31st March to 9th April for the end of year stock
take
We will be attending
Porthmadog show on the 5th & 6th of May, the Slim Gauge Circle
meeting on Sunday 13th May and the 7mm NGA Convention in Burton on
Trent on the 19th May but will be closed in between as I am staying
in Wales to drive some trains.
We will be closed 27th
July to 13th August due to some more train driving.
We may also be closed
at short notice for several weeks in the not to distant future if
certain aspects of the day job come to fruition and I end up making
a site visit to one of my current projects which happens to be in
the anti podes.
In no way should this be seen as any sort of closure, retreat or such
like, its a move to balance our life out a bit and re-kindle our
enthusiasm. we will continue to seek out narrow gauge items and bring
them to the UK. You may though see an increase in one off and short run
items offered only in these newsletters and never making it on to the
main website.
These are the exhibitions we
will be attending in the near future.
A reminder from the last
newsletter
Chiltern NG Show is Cancelled
I have just been informed that due to a
diminishing membership the Dunstable Model Railway Club has
decided to wind itself up and shut up shop.
So what, you may ask?
They organised the annual Chiltern Narrow
Gauge Show in July and that event is now cancelled.
Whilst not
trading at the York show over Easter I will be there
demonstrating some kit building on the 7mm NGA stand and
substituting for Phil on Port Wynnstays stand. If there is
something you want me to bring for you to collect you need to
have arranged it well in advance and be clear which day you are
collecting it. I already have more K class engines to deliver
than I can carry so I do need to know which day.
Any Other
Business
As usual I planned a brief
newsletter and it turned into a bit of an epic. More in about a month
