Narrow gauge modelling by its nature invites the modeller who is always on the look out for a good thing to take to bits and modify in to his idea of narrow gauge heaven. A regular requirement of this activity is a loco chassis as a starting point.

Occasionally we get offered deals on ideal candidates for this treatment and when we do we'll post them here if there are any left once they've been offered to our newsletter subscribers.

Joueff Loco

Ideal Chassis for conversion to Narrow Gauge?

We’ve just received a delivery of the Jouef Junior range 0-6-0 which is an HO scale engine which makes it an ideal chassis for building a small NG 0-6-0. Its an inside frame 0-6-0 with outside cylinders but inside valve gear. I am told they run really nicely and looking at the model its hard to see what it is about it that qualifies it for the junior range as it is very nicely detailed.

Chassis

Basic Dimensions are

  • Length over Couplings  110mm

  • Length over buffers      100mm

  • Body Length                 84mm

  • Body Width                 32mm

  • Height                          48mm approx.

  • Wheelbase                   45mm [20.5 + 24.5]

It appears to be DCC ready with the socket at the front ready to take a 6pin decoder. Oddly it doesnt mention in DCC in the very limited documentation and we haven't had the chance to try it.

We did run one [and of course took it to bits] at the Bradford 7mm NGA open day and it ran very nicely. What struck us most was the level of detail on a model supposedly for the Junior range
