LOCOMOTIVE DRIVING WHEELS |
| EDM Models is pleased to be able to add a range of locomotive
driving wheels to the ranges we sell. The first examples of these have
been custom made for us by Alan Gibson but with the technology and dies
transferring to York where the machinery is already in place to continue
production and, over time, increase the range. |
| If you have used Alan Gibson wheels before you will be familiar with
the way these wheels work. They are steel tyres with a pressed in
moulded centre. They are designed to be a press fit on to 1/8" diameter
axles. These are supplied with the wheels cut to length for 16.5mm gauge
but you should still use a back to back gauge to ensure this is right.
Crankpins are a 1mm diameter countersunk screw inserted from behind and
self tapped in to the plastic. Top hat bushes and a top hat nut complete
the crankpin assembly |

APPLICATION NOTES
I am grateful to Adrian Grey for taking one
of his England engines apart to replace the Romford wheels
shown on the left with the England engines wheels on the
right. Click on either picture for a larger view |

Before |
Things to be aware of: - |
After |
| Gear Diameter |
Motion Bracket Size |
|
| Adrian had replaced the supplied 33:1
gears with a higher ratio set of 60:1 and the diameter of
the gear on the axle is pretty close to the wheel diameter.
If fitting these wheels from the outset and
wanting a higher ratio look at a small two stage gear box
|
We believe the etched motion bracket
supplied in the kit is possibly oversize as with the correct
wheels in its too close to the ground.
We will be checking actual dimensions on
Palmerston but when we went he was lurking in the gloom at
the back of the shed. |
